Bijoux Beads

When my husband and I threw in our jobs in Dorset and moved to the sunny climes of France we knew the going could get tough. It was a huge gamble but thanks to a sudden opportunity to have a craft stall at a local campsite we have never looked back. I now sell my Jewellery all over the world and my flair for working with aluminum wire in particular has proved to be a real hit. My early careers included hairdressing and teaching, but I now work full time now as a designer and I’ve come a long way from my roots in Warwickshire where I was born.
Time for a change
I left my job in teaching and my husband left a very stressful job in Health and safety. We then said goodbye to our daughters, (and now grand children) and our English lives and bought a small holding in Sallertaine (Vendee) across the channel.
We also bought a small house which we rented out as a holiday home to make a small, much needed income. I then had a chance to develop my interests in crafts and flower arranging and eventually had the opportunity of selling some of my designs at a local campsite. I decided to take flowers, handmade cards and a small amount of jewellery. It was set up on a small round plastic table but found out that the flowers and cards were not popular with the locals but the jewellery “flew”.
I then thought seriously about starting a business as I couldn’t continue selling as a hobby, I took the bull by the horns and Bijoux Beads was born! The rest of the year was extremely busy, making and selling at the same time and also finding new venues to attend. I went from strength to strength and the following year was incredible.
Six years ago we decided to move to somewhere smaller and relocated to the small village of Soullans (also in the Vendee). We also sold our “little gite” at the same time. I was also very lucky as I now have an enormous conservatory to work in, much better than my previous working area, a small dining table! All of the doors open wide and I have the feeling of working outdoors but being undercover. Watching the birds and looking at the flowers is an added benefit.
At the same time as the move my business really took off, more so than I’d had of ever imagined. Although I still spent time looking for new venues people were now contacting me to exhibit at their show/exhibitions. I now sell on the internet, at a local Chateau, medieval fayres, four Thursdays in the summer at the Autrefois Challans (a very famous fayre) and lots of other places too. I obviously also sell at the beautiful Christmas markets in the area.

“What a great way to relax and enjoy trying a new skill.  From rummaging through the beads to forming them into your own unique jewellery, a laid back class for everyone.  Don't worry if you're not artistic, you can still make something beautiful, guided every step of the way.  Friendly and fun, I went to two classes in one holiday and feel so proud when people ask where I got my necklace from.” Jenny – Cornwall
“I’ve always been interested in making my own jewellery so was excited to join a workshop given by Beth. She demonstrated how to make a necklace and earrings and then I was given the opportunity to choose my beads.  She then guided me on how to make a necklace and matching earrings. She was very patient and also explained how to repair jewellery. Altogether an excellent experience and her workshops are excellent for a different birthday party for your daughter or ladies group.” Gillian - Challans
