Le Hutereau

Get away from it all and enjoy a relaxing holiday or a short break in the heart of the French countryside. Le Hutereau is a 400 year old former farm which has been converted into a main house and three holiday cottages.

Each cottage, or gîte, is named after a grape variety which is grown in the local area, SauvignonChenin and Muscadet. We have two three bedroomed cottages, both of which sleep 6 people and one cottage with a large family room which sleeps 3/4 people. In total we can accommodate 15/16 people in the three cottages, which is great for whole family holidays.

Our heated swimming pool is open from 1st May until 15th October.

We live on site, in the old farm house and are always available to provide local knowledge and advice on where to go and what to visit.

Whether you choose to relax and enjoy the local countryside or explore the surrounding area, we are sure you will thoroughly enjoy your stay in the hidden gem of Mayenne.

Le Hutereau has teamed up with LanguageLinkAnglo to provide language tuition in both English and French whilst you relax  in the idyllic surroundings of rural France.

Le Hutereau and LanguageLinkAnglo can accommodate your personal needs and ambitions, whether you require courses for corporate purposes, individual activities or to study for a recognised exam. Perhaps you would like to arrange a language learning break for the whole family, or maybe you prefer to meet people whilst learning French or English in a relaxing, friendly environment.

Owners Zara and Simon could not have been more welcoming; always on hand to help or advise, but never intrusive. We stayed in Sauvignon, one of their three gites, during early April and enjoyed sunny weather, with the cooler nights spent snugly in front of the efficient wood-burner. The house had been newly decorated and was very clean and well-furnished with everything we could have wished for. The bed was comfortable and the peaceful, rural surroundings meant we slept exceptionally well, waking to delightful views over the birch-studded landscape. The surrounding countryside was wonderful to explore, with quiet lanes bordered with hedgerows alive with wildlife and mossy banks studded with thousands of primroses. One of the many highlights was seeing the barn owl, which nests in the outbuildings, leaving the building in the evenings to go hunting. There are several interesting local towns within a short drive of Le Hutereau and we had a great time following some of our hosts' recommendations and discovering the variety of food, wine and architecture in the area. Le Hutereau is hidden away in an area of farmland which seems to recall the slower pace of pre-war agricultural practice, with small dairy herds and vintage tractors. Farmhouses and barns date back five hundred years or more, and most have their own selection of chickens, goats and the occasional pig roaming in their yards and orchards. Ancient apple trees are often weighed down under a burden of mistletoe and there is a real sense of enchantment, as if you were stepping back in time. Le Hutereau itself is a lovely stone building with an ancient bread oven and fascinating old outbuildings, where the original stalls for beasts can still be seen. In terms of modern comfort, there is a superb selection of food and wine available in the local supermarkets and we spent several happy hours choosing the evening's selection to be enjoyed in front of the fire. The local bakeries offer a spectacular selection of breads, cakes and pastries and there are some fine creperies, many offering good-value set menus, accompanied by the local cider. There is ample space around the gites for sitting outside with a book and the positioning means it is possible to enjoy a sunny corner at almost any time of day. We can thoroughly recommend these gites for a relaxing holiday, or as a base for a more energetic exploration of Brittany, Normandy and Mayenne.

Had a perfect stay. The rural setting is idyllic and the accommodation charming, clean and thoughtfully kitted out - a real home from home. Loved how remote it all felt, but useful shops (and restaurants!) were only a short drive away and we did some fabulous day trips - a favourite for me the musee Robert Tatin and a Aladdin's cave of a reclamation yard, thanks to a tip off from hosts Zara and Simon. Excitingly, was able to watch a family of barn owls from our doorstep each night - quite magical! Now Looking forward to a return trip - and to enjoying the new pool!

We stayed in Sauvignon for a week in August. The location is off the beaten track and very peaceful with views of fields and cows. The gite had a small garden where we sat for lunch but we spent a lot of time in the bigger grassed area to the side which has a wendy house, 2 swings and plenty of space for football, boules, bike riding etc. There is a shed with toys and games. We were the first guests to go in the swimming pool which will be a great space to use and chill out. The gite was very well equipped, clean and a lot larger than it looked online. The girls (5 and 7) were very excited to sleep in bunk beds (even though they could have had a room each). The rooms were comfortable and tastefully decorated. We enjoyed the local area especially the road train in Fougeres (next time we will visit the castle as it looked good) and Les Jardins des Renaudies (just 6 mins from the gite by car) which had an activity day but the gardens were worth a visit without the activities. Simon and Zara were great hosts and on hand to give us information and maps for the local area and they helped us to book a horse riding lesson which turned out to be a 2 hr pony experience. A great and relaxing holiday which we all enjoyed. We will be back to holiday here again in the next few years.

We had a wonderful 3 nights staying at Le Hutereau and had a very warm welcome from Simon and Zara. Our boys loved it here with lots to do, see and explore. A fabulous relaxing environment, shame we had to leave!

We had a great time in France. The gite was big and clean and the girls loved the bunk beds. Simon and Zara are great hosts and it was fun to play in the pool and with the dogs.

Perfect hosts, beautiful location! Had a wonderful time!

A great stay in the newly renovated Chenin. Had a very relaxing time cycling, eating and drinking. A very warm welcome from Zara and Simon.
Wonderful week in Sauvignon - fantastic area - lots to do - many thanks to Zara and Simon who are wonderful hosts! Looking forward to another week soon.
Chenin felt like a home from home. Loved the wood burning stove and the space. Lots to see and do. Thank you Simon and Zara - Perfect hosts!

Le Hutereau is not only a great location/venue but it comes complete with fantastic hosts in Zara and Simon. Their communication from start to finish was brilliant, helping us to understand the local amenities and ensure that we were able to travel with confidence that we were in safe hands. In total there were 15 of us staying for NYE, 4 children and 11 adults and it's safe to say that everyone enjoyed themselves. After driving 6hrs from Calais we arrived in thick fog and ice everywhere, all of which added to the experience and the fact that Zara and Simon had heated the houses with the fireplaces and electric heaters. During the colder months the thought of heating a house with a fire and a couple of electric radiators can seem a bit daunting however the set up it very simple and there's plenty of wood to go around, it really does take no time to get your fire going. Each of the houses were self contained, allowing people to have privacy but easily accessible for everyone to simply move from house to house. We used 1 of the larger houses to host our NYE party with everyone comfortably fitting on the open plan ground floor. The music was loud and confined to the 1 house, barely audible from outside when the door was closed. There's plenty of local supermarkets if you want to fully immerse yourselves in the self catering experience, we drove via Mayenne on route which is about 20mins from Le Hutereau and stopped at the local Aldi to pick up supplies. Zara and Simon were so inviting and friendly that on NYE itself Zara and Simon joined us with some of the guests from their own house. Although we didn't get to use the pool (weather and time of year) it was clear that in the summer this would be a great bonus for any guests. When you arrive you can see from how clean the houses are that Zara and Simon take pride in their accommodation and when you talk to them you'll quickly see the excitement on their faces and the thoughtfulness they put into making your experience one to remember. We had an amazing time, if you're looking for a getaway to relax with friends/family and feel like you're at a home away from home then you won't be disappointed.
